Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.
We are called Miffys Misfits and we are 6 x ordinary blokes (and very ordinary athletes) setting out to do Ironman NZ in Taupo in March.
Personally for me (Dave), I love the sport but for the other 5, I think it's more a case of them enjoying wearing lycra and waxing their legs. Each to their own. :)
Our team is made up of...
Dave Sutton aka Guru (team mother and councillor)
Paul Leslie aka Sarge (on the bike he's always drafting)
Neil Cording aka Chewy (ridiculously hairy)
Andy Wallace aka Judge Judy (our legal advisor)
Michael Hall aka Greystoke (went grey at age 12)
Andrew Oliver aka Casper (he's like a ghost so much that we are not actually sure he exists)
Ironman consists of a 4km Swim, a 180km Bike and a 42km Run / Walk / Hobble / Crawl to the finish line. There may also be a few naps along the way.
Its gonna hurt but nothing compared to what some women and their families go through so we are supporting kiwi women by raising money for The Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand.
Nine women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand. The money we raise from this page will be used to fund vital research projects and medical grants to help improve the survivorship of breast cancer in New Zealand. It will also help support kiwi women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer through services such as counselling and rehabilitation programmes.
Our story is also a personal one with Sarge having lost his wife 7 years ago to breast cancer. In his brief words here is his story...
In October 2010 Miffy was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Our children, Guinevere and Gwyllym were 4 and 9 respectively.
To watch them see their mum go through operations and then chemo / radiation was tough and then to watch Miffy go through the battle of fighting this thief of life was extremely hard.
After a year of treatments and getting back to some sort of normality, a scan showed the tumours were back, and this time they had spread to the Liver, Lungs, Sternum and eventually the Brain.
On her 42nd Birthday, Miffy was Diagnosed with Terminal Triple Negative Breast Cancer. There was no way to come back from this and after a short spell of medication and some quality time with us and friends, Miffy passed peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones.
It would be fantastic if you could spare a little bit of coin for our cause and hopefully follow our journey on instagram @miffysmisfits so you can see we really are a bunch of misfits.
Thanks heaps and we will see ya at the finish line .... at some point :)
